Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars cruise to big win over Winnipeg

Belmore scores 28, adds 7 rebounds and 7 assists in victory

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team held Winnipeg to just three second-quarter points in an 84-49 victory over the Wesmen on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on the U of R campus.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a first quarter which saw the Cougars jump out to a 26-17 lead, a three-pointer by Winnipeg's Jazmin Burch turned out to be the only points of the entire period for the visitors.
  • Regina took a healthy 37-20 lead into the halftime break, then sprinted away from Winnipeg in the third as they outscored the Wesmen by a 28-10 margin in that period before going on to a 35-point victory.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore led the Cougars with a game-high 28 points while also chipping in with 7 rebounds and 7 assists.
  • Three other Regina players hit double figures in scoring. Cara Misskey had 16 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists while Izzi Fust scored 15 and Rachel Vanderhooft had 10 on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
  • Birch led Winnipeg with 13 points while Jennifer Kallon scored 10.

POSTSEASON BATTLE
  • The Cougars (11-2) continue to be mired in what's turned out to be a four-way battle for first place in Canada West's Prairie Division. Saskatchewan and Alberta also won on Friday to keep pace with the Cougars at 11-2, while Calgary's Friday win over Mount Royal has the Dinos just a game back at 10-3.
  • Winnipeg (4-9) is a game behind Manitoba for the seventh and final Prairie Division postseason berth.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will host Winnipeg again on Saturday night to finish off the two-game weekend series. Game time is set for 6:00 PM at the CKHS.
