Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars drop five-set heartbreaker to MacEwan

Evjen racks up career-high 16 kills in loss

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's volleyball team had second-set and fourth-set victories, but couldn't finish off MacEwan in the fifth and deciding set as the Griffins won their first Canada West match of the season on Friday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MacEwan opened up the match with a 25-20 win in the first, but it was a different story in the second set. The Cougars sprinted out to an 8-1 lead and then collected five straight points with Piper Harkness serving to go up 13-3, and Regina then cruised to a 25-12 victory to square the match at a set apiece.
  • The third was close until MacEwan's 7-1 run midway through the set put them up 17-12. The Griffins held a comfortable lead the rest of the way and took a 25-19 victory.
  • The Cougars led from wire to wire in the fourth. They scored the first four points with Cassadi Klapak serving and led by as many as seven before MacEwan brought it back to 23-21. But the Cougars replied with a Harkness kill, then a long hit by MacEwan forced a fifth set with a 25-23 victory for Regina.
  • But the fifth was all MacEwan. The Griffins had four consecutive early points, and then a pair of 5-0 runs which helped give them a 15-5 victory in the deciding set.

NOTES
  • The Cougars fall to 4-11 with the loss.
  • Reese Evjen had a career-high 16 kills, topping her previous best of 15 which she set back on Jan. 13, 2024 in a win over Brandon.
  • Jordy McEachern and Devyn Grimsrud both hit double digits in kills with 13 and 10, respectively. McEachern also had 10 digs for a double-double, while libero McKenzie Keibel had a match-leading 19 digs.
