No. 4 Winnipeg completes weekend sweep over Cougars

Wesmen go on early 16-0 run to take control

QUICKLY
The No. 4-ranked Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep on Saturday night with a 78-61 victory over the Regina Cougars at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on the U of R campus.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Winnipeg took control of the game with a 16-0 run which started late in the first quarter and led the rest of the way. That run started with the Cougars in front by an 11-6 margin, and Malachi Alexander's three-pointer capped the surge and put Winnipeg up 22-11 two minutes into the second.
  • The Wesmen led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter and took a 36-23 lead into halftime, but Regina made some inroads in the third. The Cougars chipped away at the lead and got as close as five points after a Christian Tabiri bucket late in the third and again on the next possession thanks to a Ben Kamba layup at the third-quarter buzzer.
  • But the Cougars weren't able to keep that momentum going in the fourth. Winnipeg scored on its first three possessions of the quarter to go back up by 11, and the Cougars trailed by at least eight points the rest of the way.

NOTES
  • Four Cougars scored in double figures led by Kamba's 15 points. Tabiri finished with 13, Jamie White scored 12, and Lodie Kenyi had 11 to go along with a team-leading 9 rebounds.
  • Kenyi also had a team-high five assists for Regina.
  • Lamar Everd led Winnipeg with 14 points.

POSTSEASON LOOK
  • The Cougars (6-8) remain in sixth place in Canada West's Prairie Division standings, but are now just one game up on seventh-place Alberta (5-9) thanks to the Golden Bears' upset road victory on Saturday over No. 9 Manitoba.
  • If the season ended today, the Cougars would be assigned Canada West's No. 11 seed in the postseason thanks to their sixth-place standing in the Prairie.

NEXT UP
Regina will now prepare for a critical two-game series in Edmonton next weekend against Alberta. The Cougars and Golden Bears will meet on Friday night (8:00 MT) and Saturday night (7:00 MT) at the U of A's Saville Community Sports Centre.
