Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 8 Pandas defeat Cougars in overtime thriller in Edmonton

Belmore scores 28, grabs 11 rebounds in loss

QUICKLY
Two free throws by Jade Belmore at the fourth-quarter buzzer sent it to overtime, but the University of Regina's women's basketball team suffered a 78-72 defeat to No. 8 Alberta on Friday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre on the U of A campus in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alberta shot out of the gates on Friday with the first 10 points of the game on a run which featured three-pointers by both Annacy Palmer and Morgan Harris. The Pandas led by seven after the opening quarter, and a 9-0 run in the second helped put Alberta up by 20 a couple minutes before halftime. But the Cougars put together a big run themselves, finishing the half on a 14-1 run to cut Alberta's lead to just five heading into the break.
  • The Pandas rebuilt their double-digit lead by the end of the third quarter and led by as many as 12 in the fourth before a 15-2 run by Regina — capped by a Belmore three-pointer — gave the Cougars what would be their only lead of the game at 62-61 with a little under four minutes to go.
  • After another clutch triple by Belmore brought Regina back to within two points with just 27 seconds to go, the Cougars got a defensive stop but got the ball back with only seconds left on the clock. Belmore attempted what would have been a game-winning heave from half court, but was fouled on the play and was sent to the line for three free throws with no time remaining on the clock. Belmore made the first two, but missed the final one and the game went to an extra session.
  • Reece Hall led Alberta in overtime, hitting an early triple and then scoring the Pandas' next two buckets to put them up six over Regina. After a layup by Belmore brought Regina back to within four, Alberta got defensive stops on the next three Cougar possessions to seal the win.

NOTES
  • Belmore finished with 28 points and added 11 rebounds to notch her second consecutive double-double and her seventh double-double of the Canada West schedule.
  • Rachel Vanderhooft scored 16 points for Regina, matching her career high for the second consecutive game. Cara Misskey scored 12 points and added 6 rebounds.
  • Hall and Palmer led Alberta in scoring with 21 points and 17 points, respectively.
  • The Cougars went into the game in a three-way tie with Alberta and Saskatchewan for first place in the Prairie Division standings. The Pandas and the Huskies are now 13-2 on the season, with Regina and Calgary both a game back at 12-3.
