Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 5 Fraser Valley defeats Cougars in three

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's volleyball team lost in three straight sets to No. 5 Fraser Valley on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on the U of R campus.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was the closest of the night. The Cougars led the most of the way and thought they had pulled ahead 21-17 after Piper Harkness and Devyn Grimsrud got up to block an attack from the right side by UFV's Lauren Attieh. But the officials reversed the call to give the point to the Cascades, and the visitors then took three of the next four points to go up 22-21 and force a Regina timeout. On UFV's second attempt at set point, the Cascades got a kill from Attieh to clinch a 26-24 win.
  • The second set was all Fraser Valley. The Cascades went on a 12-0 run with Alicja Hardy-Francis on serve, turning what had been a slim 5-4 lead into a 17-4 advantage on their way to a 25-6 win.
  • UFV then used a 7-1 run in the third set to put them up 20-12 before going on to a 25-14 victory to clinch the match.

NOTES
  • Mandi Feist and Talia Attieh led UFV offensively with 13 kills and 12 kills, respectively. Cailin Bitter had 33 assists in the win.
  • Fraser Valley's win improves the Cascades' record to 13-2 on the season and keeps them in first place in the Canada West standings. Second-place UBC is also 13-2 after winning on Friday, but UFV is currently ahead on the tiebreaker.
  • Samantha Krausher had a team-leading seven kills for Regina, which falls to 4-13 on the season with the loss.

NEXT UP
The Cougars and the Cascades will play again on Saturday night at the CKHS. First serve is set for an hour earlier than normal at 5:00 PM.
