QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team suffered a 5-3 loss at Manitoba on Saturday as the Bisons pulled back to four points ahead of the Cougars in Canada West's East Division standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pippy Pritchard opened the scoring with her first Canada West goal late in the first. Cassidy Peters chipped the puck up the left boards for Pritchard, who won a battle with a Manitoba defender to go in alone on a breakaway and deked to her forehand for the goal.
- Manitoba tied it up with a Kylie Lesuk goal early in the second, then a goal by Sophia Anderson a few minutes later gave the Bisons their first lead of the weekend.
- The Cougars tied it up a little later in the second. Jules Stokes stepped into a slap shot from the high slot which was saved, but Peters jumped on the rebound and scored her second of the year to knot the score at 2-2.
- But Manitoba's Norah Collins got a late goal to put the Bisons up through 40 minutes, then Ashley Keller and Sadie Keller both scored for Manitoba in the third to put the home side up 5-2.
- Jules Stokes scored a late goal for Regina after forcing a turnover in the U of R zone and leading a 3-on-1 going back the other way. Stokes rifled a shot high blocker side for her second goal of the season.
NOTES
- Peters and Stokes both finished with a goal and an assist for the Cougars. Arden Kliewer got the start in net and stopped 22 of Manitoba's 27 shots.
- Despite the loss, the Cougars (10-10-4) clinched a playoff berth after MacEwan defeated Saskatchewan in a shootout.
- Regina is in third place in the East Division, four points back of second-place Manitoba. The Cougars defeated the Bisons four out of six times this season, so they'd hold the tiebreaker if the two teams finish with the same amount of points.
- The second-place finisher in the East will host Trinity Western in a best-of-three quarterfinal series, while the team that places third will almost certainly head to Mount Royal to open the playoffs.
NEXT UP
The Cougars will now prepare for a home series against Mount Royal next Friday and Saturday at The Co-operators Centre. They'll close out the Canada West season with two road games at MacEwan on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15.
