QUICKLY
The No. 3-ranked Calgary Dinos pulled away in the second half for a 101-84 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on the U of R campus.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half featured 12 lead changes as the two teams played a close opening two quarters. Regina built up a seven-point lead at one point in the first quarter, and a three-pointer by Jordan Persad capped an 11-1 run which gave the Cougars an eight-point lead with four minutes to go in the second. But Calgary quickly brought it back, and the teams went into the half with Regina up 48-46.
- The third quarter had three more lead changes, but the final one of the game happened when Calgary used a 10-1 run to pull ahead for good. That surge gave the Dinos an eight-point lead at 71-63 and the visitors went into the fourth up by nine.
- In the final quarter, Calgary pulled ahead by double digits before the Cougars put together eight straight points on a run capped by a Jordan Persad jumper with a little under four minutes to go. That made the score 89-82 for Calgary, but the Dinos outscored the Cougars 12-2 the rest of the way to seal the win.
POSTSEASON UPDATE
- Calgary keeps pace with Winnipeg and Manitoba with the win as all three teams remain tied atop the Prairie Division with a 15-4 record. Another win by the Dinos on Saturday, combined with a loss by either the Bisons or the Wesmen, will give the Dinos the division title. If all three teams remain tied after Saturday, Manitoba will finish first in the East and the Dinos will finish second.
- The Cougars will need a Saturday win over the Dinos, combined with a win by Saskatchewan over Brandon, to qualify for the postseason as Canada West's No. 12 seed.
NOTES
- Nate Petrone was 12-for-18 from the field and had a game-high 27 points for Calgary. Four other Dinos players hit double figures in scoring including Noah Wharton with 18, Aidan Smith with 14, and Declan Peterson and Martynas Sabaliauskas both with 12.
- Persad had a team-leading 26 points for the Cougars. Lodie Kenyi scored 21 to go along with 6 assists, 4 steals, and 4 rebounds. Christian Tabiri came off the bench to score 12 points in 16 minutes on the floor.
