Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars close out regular season with win over MacEwan

Girardin scores lone goal, Kliewer saves 42 in shutout

QUICKLY
Julianne Girardin's shot from the point on the power play late in the second stood as the only goal and Arden Kliewer had the shutout as the University of Regina's women's hockey team closed out the Canada West schedule with a 1-0 road victory over MacEwan on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • While Friday's game saw Regina have a pronounced advantage in shots but lost 4-1 to MacEwan, Saturday's game was the exact opposite. MacEwan enjoyed a 42-22 shot edge, but it was the Cougars pulling out the 1-0 victory.
  • After going all of the first period and almost the entire second without a goal, Girardin finally broke the goose egg late in the middle stanza with MacEwan's Robyn Short in the box serving a tripping minor. The second-year defender fired a shot through traffic which beat GMU goalie Brianna Sank, giving Girardin her second goal of the weekend.
  • The third period was all MacEwan as the Griffins spent nearly half the frame on the power play. The Cougars took four penalties in the third — including an early boarding major assessed to Kaylee Dyer — but killed them all off, and Kliewer stopped all 18 shots she faced in the period to preserve her first shutout of the season and the fifth of her U SPORTS career.

NOTES
  • Kliewer's 42 saves equals her career high, which she originally set earlier this season at Alberta on Nov. 15.
  • Pippy Pritchard and Olivia Leggett drew the assists on Girardin's goal.
  • The Cougars finished 1-for-2 on the power play and successfully killed off all seven of MacEwan's attempts.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will now prepare for a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series against Mount Royal in Calgary.
  • Game 1 is set for Friday night (7:00 MT) and Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday night (5:00 MT). If it's needed, the third and deciding game will be played on Sunday night (5:00 MT).
  • The winner of the Cougars/Cougars quarterfinal will advance to the Canada West semifinals, where they'll meet East Division champion Alberta in another best-of-three series.
