Mount Royal pulls away in third for win over Cougars

MRU scores five in the third after teams were tied 3-3 through 40 minutes

QUICKLY
A barrage of third-period goals lifted Mount Royal to an 8-3 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday in a Canada West men's hockey game at Flames Community Arena in Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mount Royal opened the scoring just 53 seconds into Saturday's game when Jayden Wiens slipped a pass over to Connor Bouchard for a one-timer on a 2-on-1. The same two connected on their very next shift, this time Bouchard setting up Wiens to give Mount Royal an early 2-0 lead.
  • MRU took the 2-0 advantage into the first intermission, then Wiens scored early in the second to extend the home side's lead to 3-0.
  • Regina then exploded for three goals in the span of 2:27 to get right back in the game. The surge started with a Matt Culling goal with the Cougars on a 5-on-3 power play, then Jakob Brook tied the game with another power play marker when he pounced on a rebound after Carson Whyte deflected an Eric Pearce point shot. Regina tied it up shortly thereafter when Turner McMillen found Eric Houk, who was all alone against MRU goalie Shane Farkas and went five-hole to notch his fifth goal of the season.
  • The two teams went into the third period tied at 3-3, but the final frame was all Mount Royal. Wiens finished off the hat trick with what turned out to be the game-winning goal four minutes in, and Robbie Holmes, Blake Stevenson, Clay Hanus, and Teague Patton also scored for MRU in the third.

NOTES
  • McMillen also assisted on Culling's goal, giving the rookie forward his second multi-point game of the season.
  • Jackson Fellner made 46 saves for the Cougars. Mount Royal had a 54-23 advantage in shots on net during the contest.
  • The Cougars were 2-for-4 on the power play and held Mount Royal scoreless on its four opportunities with the man advantage.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will close out their 2024-25 season next weekend at home with games against MacEwan on Friday night (7:00) and Saturday night (5:00) at The Co-operators Centre.
