Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars close road decision to No. 3 Saskatchewan

U of R to finish fourth in Prairie Division, go into postseason as Canada West's No. 7 seed

QUICKLY
The No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies pulled away from the Regina Cougars down the stretch on Saturday night for a 70-61 victory in a Canada West women's basketball game in Saskatoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars led for the majority of the first half, building up a seven-point lead in both the first quarter and the second before Saskatchewan's 9-0 run gave the Huskies a 30-28 lead a little over four minutes before halftime.
  • Saskatchewan took a slim 39-37 into the break and the Huskies built up a seven-point lead themselves in the third, but the Cougars closed the quarter on a 13-2 run to take a four-point advantage into the fourth.
  • Regina's Jade Belmore scored a bucket with about three and a half minutes remaining to get the Cougars to within three at 63-60, but that would turn out to be the U of R's final field goal of the game. The Cougars attempted five three-pointers in the final three minutes but missed them all, and some late free throws by Saskatchewan pushed the eventual margin of victory to nine.

NOTES
  • Gage Grassick led Saskatchewan with 24 points. Logan Reider scored 18.
  • Belmore had a game-high 25 points for the Cougars while Cara Misskey finished just behind her with 23. Rachel Vanderhooft was the only other U of R player with a field goal, finishing with four points.

POSTSEASON UPDATE
  • Saturday's results lock the Cougars (12-6) into fourth place in Canada West's Prairie Division. With two games to go, they sit three wins back of third-place Calgary and three ahead of fifth-place Mount Royal.
  • The Cougars know they'll head into the Canada West postseason as the conference's No. 7 seed. They'll travel to UBC for a play-in game on Feb. 21 against the No. 10 seed - which will almost certainly be UBC Okanagan - with the winner to play UBC in a quarterfinal matchup.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will host Calgary next Friday and Saturday to close out the Canada West schedule.
