Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars drop weekend series to Calgary

Losses drop Regina to 4-8 with eight Canada West games remaining

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina Cougars men's basketball team was in Calgary this weekend taking on the Dinos but were unable to come away with a road win, falling 97-71 on Friday and 90-83 on Saturday.
FRIDAY NOTES
  • The teams exchanged baskets early, with the Cougars leading 12-11 with 3:33 to go in the 1st quarter. That proved to be Regina's final lead of the game, as the Dinos closed the quarter on a 13-2 run.
  • Calgary extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 27-16, and went on to secure a 97-71 victory
  • Sufyan Elkannan led the Cougars with 16 points. Cade Mather recorded his third career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while also adding four steals.
SATURDAY NOTES
  • Saturday's game was much closer, with eight lead changes in the first quarter alone. The Cougars trailed by just two after one thanks to nine first-quarter points from Lodie Kenyi.
  • Calgary led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, and took a 52-43 lead into halftime.
  • In the second half, the Cougars came out firing, and a Ben Kamba jumper tied the game with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
  •  The Dinos built their lead back up to 10 in the fourth, but Regina refused to go away. Back-to-back three-pointers by Sufyan Elkannan and Kamba cut the deficit to four, and a few minutes later Kamba knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a three-point game.
  • However, the comeback ultimately fell short, and Calgary held on for a 90-83 win.
  • Kamba led the Cougars with 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Elkannan added 20. Kaz Dornstauder posted season highs with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
STANDINGS
  • With the pair of losses, the Cougars fall to 4-8 in Canada West play, sitting in eighth in the Prairie Division with eight regular-season games remaining
  • The Dinos improve to 7-5 and move into fourth place in the division.
NEXT UP
  • The Cougars stay on the road next weekend, when they will head to Winnipeg for a series against #6 ranked Winnipeg (9-3)
