Cougars secure critical late-season three-point weekend against Pandas

QUICKLY
  • The Cougars hosted the Alberta Pandas for two exciting home matchups, with the Cougars falling 1-0 in overtime on Friday, before bouncing back with a thrilling 3-2 shootout win on Saturday.
 
FRIDAY RECAP
  • Friday's game featured 14 combined penalties in regulation, but stellar defense and goaltending resulted in a 0-0 stalemate heading into overtime.
  • After a Regina penalty, Alberta was able to break the tie and took the game 1-0.
  • Natalie Williamson was amazing in net, stopping 50 shots including 21 in the second period alone.
  • It is her second game this season with at least 50 saves. She had 55 on Halloween against at UBC.
SATURDAY RECAP
  • Alberta got on the board much quicker on Saturday, scoring less than five minutes into the first period, then again 10 minutes later.
  • The Cougars responded late in the second, when Rayna Hennie scored her second goal of the season with assists from Quinn McLaren and Maggie Kate Fitzpatrick.
  • Trailing 2-1 for most of the third, the Cougars needed an equalizer, and got one when Fitzpatrick scored an unassisted goal with just over three minutes remaining, sending the game to overtime.
  • After a scoreless overtime period, it was Jordyn Blais who was the hero for the Cougars, going top shelf for the eventual shootout winner.
  •  Amy Swayze got the start for the Cougars and finished with 23 saves.
STANDINGS UPDATE
  • With the weekend split, the Cougars sit at 6-10-4 -- 3 points back of Manitoba for the third and final playoff spot in the East division.
NEXT UP
  • The Cougars continue Canada West play next weekend when they head to Calgary to take on No. 4 ranked Mount Royal.
