Cougars rally late to beat Golden Bears on Friday, split weekend series at home

Regina currently sit one game out of playoff position

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina Cougars men's basketball team split the weekend series against the University of Alberta Golden Bears, winning 68-64 on Friday and losing 98-69 on Saturday.
FRIDAY NOTES
  • Alberta came out firing, scoring the game's first eight points. They led 25-18 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Cougars trailed for the entirety of the second and third quarters and fell behind by as many as eight in the fourth before mounting their comeback.
  • Three-pointers from Ben Kamba and Sufyan Elkannan helped the Cougars tie the game with 1:38 remaining.
  • Kaz Dornstauder was fouled after an offensive rebound and made both free throws to give the Cougars their first lead of the game.
  • Dornstauder blocked a Golden Bear layup attempt on the following possession, and Lodie Kenyi knocked in two free throws to seal the deal for the Cougars.
  • Ben Kamba had a game-high 17 points. Lodie Kenyi also reached double figures with 16 points.
  • Dornstauder had nine points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. He is tied for second in Canada West in blocks per game with 1.4.
  • Isaac Simon paced Alberta with 15 points.
 
SATURDAY NOTES
  • Alberta came out hot on Saturday, shooting over 70 per cent from the field in the first quarter and led 55-35 at the end of the first half.
  • Regina was not able to close the gap in the second half and lost 98-69.
  • Sufyan Elkannan (17), Ben Kamba (14), and Isaiah Bay (11) all scored double-digit points for the Cougars.
  • Isaac Simon led the Golden Bears with 22 points. Caiden Kushnir added 20.
STANDINGS UPDATE
  • After the weekend split, the Cougars are 5-11 and in 8th place in the Prairie Division. The top seven teams in the division make the playoffs.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will take on the Saskatchewan Huskies in a crucial home-and-home series. They will play in Saskatoon on Thursday, Jan. 29 and will host them at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport on Saturday, Jan. 31.
