Cougars pick up road win over Saskatchewan

Regina improves to 6-11, moves into seventh in Prairie Division

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's basketball team pulled into playoff position with a 72-66 road win over Saskatchewan on Thursday in a U-Prairie Challenge game in Saskatoon.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cougars never trailed, but the game remained tight throughout as the lead never reached double digits at any point. Regina led 22-16 after the opening quarter, 38-33 at the half, and 49-42 after a low-scoring third which saw the teams combine for just 20 points.
  • The game was a single-possession affair for much of the fourth and the Huskies got to within one point of the Cougars at two points late in the period.
  • After Saskatchewan pulled to within one point for the second time at 62-61 with three minutes to go, Lodie Kenyi hit back-to-back three-pointers to quickly push the lead to seven.
  • Saskatchewan's Mohamed Mahadhi had consecutive buckets for the Huskies to get them to within three, but Ben Kamba and Kenyi both hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to seal the win for the Cougars.
  • Kenyi scored a game-high 27 points in the win for the Cougars while also putting up 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Kamba added 13 points, Isaiah Bay scored 9, Cade Mather had 8, and Kaz Dornstauder collected 7 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Easton Thimm had 15 points and 17 rebounds for Saskatchewan.

DIVISION STANDINGS
  • The win moves the Cougars (6-11) into the seventh and final playoff spot in Canada West's Prairie Division, just behind Brandon (6-10) and just ahead of Lethbridge (6-12).
  • Saskatchewan is lurking just behind the three six-win teams with a 5-12 conference record.

NEXT UP
  • The two teams will meet again in another crucial late-season matchup on Saturday night in Regina. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on the U of R campus.
