Pandas outlast Cougars, hand Regina first loss in Canada West play

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina women's basketball lost its first game of the regular season on Saturday, falling 65-61 to the University of Alberta Pandas.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cougars led by four after the first quarter and as many as 11 in the second, but the Pandas closed the half on an 11-0 run to tie the game 34-34.
  • The third quarter was a defensive battle, but the Cougars held a three-point lead heading into the fourth thanks to eight points from Cara Misskey in the frame.
  • The lead was extended to 10 with 7:48 remaining, but Alberta went on another run, tying the game a little more than three minutes later.
  • The Pandas led by six with just over a minute to play, but a Jade Belmore three-pointer cut the lead to three. After an Alberta turnover, Belmore was fouled and made her first free-throw, pulling the Cougars within two.
  • The Cougars had a chance to tie it after an offensive rebound but were unsuccessful, and the Pandas held on for the 65-61 victory.
  • Misskey led the Cougars with 15 points and added six rebounds and 5 assists.
  • Belmore had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lilly Vande Graaf added 11 points off the bench.
  • Jayden Tanner scored a game-high 25 points for the Pandas.
 
AFTER THE LOSS
  • The Cougars sit at 15-1 and remain second in the Prairie Division.
  • Saskatchewan swept Calgary over the weekend and remains unbeaten at 16-0.
NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will head to Saskatoon for a highly anticipated match up against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Thursday, Jan. 29, before hosting the Huskies at the CKHS on Saturday, Jan. 31.
