Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cunningham backstops Cougars to 5-4 road win over No. 3 Saskatchewan

First-year goalie makes 46 saves while Silzer records three-point night in victory

QUICKLY
  • Damon Cunningham stopped 46 shots to backstop the University of Regina Cougars to a 5-4 road victory over No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan on Friday night in a U-Prairie Challenge game at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kade Runke got the Cougars on the board just two minutes in when he intercepted an errant pass in the neutral zone and broke in alone on Saskatchewan starting goalie Jordan Kooy. Runke's initial shot was saved, but he knocked home the rebound to notch his first goal of the campaign.
  • Cade Hayes replied for Saskatchewan later in the first, but the Cougars restored the lead when Landen Gulutzan made a nice pass through a seam to find Jordan Borysiuk. Borysiuk rifled a shot past Kooy to put Regina up 2-1 at the first intermission.
  • Gunner Kinniburgh tied it up with a goal for Saskatchewan three minutes into the middle stanza, but the Cougars quickly jumped back into the lead. Just over a minute after the U of S goal, Brayden Barnett deflected a Rylan Silzer shot from the right point to put the Cougars up 3-2.
  • Regina wasn't done there, scoring twice before the end of the second. Silzer notched his first U SPORTS goal on a rocket of a slap shot off a feed from Parker Jasper, then Eric Pearce walked into a shot from the left faceoff dot with the Cougars on a power play to put the visitors up 5-2.
  • Saskatchewan went on a big push in the final period and got a pair of goals as Chantz Petruic and Liam Keeler both scored, but Cunningham and the U of R defence stood tall despite the Huskies enjoying a 23-4 shot advantage in the third.

NOTES
  • The assists by Gulutzan and Jasper gave both first-year forwards their first U SPORTS points.
  • Silzer finished with a goal and two assists for his first multiple-point game with the Cougars.
  • Runke and Paycen Bjorklund also had two-point efforts. Runke had the second assist on Borysiuk's goal to go along with his own marker, while Bjorklund had helpers on the goals by Barnett and Pearce.
  • Cunningham's performance was his second 46-save outing of the season. He also had 46 saves against Saskatchewan back on Oct. 25 in Regina.

QUOTABLE
  • "We told the guys this week that Saskatchewan is an extremely talented team and we were going to have to play hard as a group, stay connected, and get contributions from everybody. We were definitely able to do that tonight. We knew they were going to make a big push in the third but Cunningham shut the door and the guys in front of him were blocking shots and doing whatever they could for us to come away with the win." - Cougars head coach Trevor Keeper

NEXT UP
  • The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre in Regina. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM.
