Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Dvernichuk scores twice as Cougars take overtime win over Saskatchewan

Fifth-year forward nets winner just 34 seconds into extra frame in 2-1 win

QUICKLY
  • Amy Dvernichuk scored both goals, including the overtime winner just 34 seconds into the extra period, as the University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 2-1 win over Saskatchewan in a U-Prairie Challenge game on Friday night in Saskatoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless opening period, the Cougars opened the scoring on the power play just 3:48 into the second. Quinn McLaren's shot from the point went wide and bounced off the end boards to Kaitlyn Gilroy, who collected the puck behind the net and fed Dvernichuk out front for her third goal of the season.
  • The Cougars carried their 1-0 lead into the third period, but Saskatchewan pulled even at the 12:50 mark. Kaysah Nurani finished off a 3-on-2 rush, taking a cross-ice feed and beating Regina goaltender Amy Swayze to tie the game at 1-1.
  • It didn't take long for the Cougars to end things in overtime. Ivy Perkin drove to the net and put a shot past Saskatchewan goaltender Clara Juca, but the puck hit the post and stayed on the goal line. Dvernichuk was there to poke it home just 34 seconds into the extra period, giving the rookie her fourth goal of the season and the Cougars the victory.

COUGAR HIGHLIGHTS
  • Dvernichuk's two-goal performance gives her four goals through Regina's first five Canada West games.
  • Swayze stopped 16 of the 17 shots she faced to earn the win, while Juca made 16 saves for Saskatchewan.
  • The Cougars finished 1-for-2 on the power play and killed off Saskatchewan's lone opportunity with the man advantage.
  • Quinn McLaren got the secondary assist on both of Dvernichuk's goals, giving her five points in five games to start the Canada West season.

STANDINGS UPDATE
  • The win improves Regina's record to 2-3-0, moving the Cougars into a tie with Manitoba for fourth place in the West Division with four points.
  • Saskatchewan (3-1-1) earned a point in the overtime loss and moved ahead of idle UBC into first place in the West Division with seven points.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars and Huskies will complete their home-and-home U-Prairie Challenge series on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre in Regina. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
