The University of Regina women's hockey team was unable to complete a weekend sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies, falling 1-0 Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
After earning a 2-1 overtime win Friday night, the Cougars were held off the scoresheet in the rematch despite recording 21 shots on goal.
Jaiyana Nurani scored the game's only goal at 11:22 of the first period, converting a pass from Kara Mitenko to give Saskatchewan the early lead. The Huskies protected that advantage for the remainder of the contest, with goaltender Emma Backman stopping all 21 shots she faced to earn the shutout.
Cougars goaltender Payton Schlamp kept Regina within one throughout the game, making 21 saves on 22 shots. Regina had an opportunity to find the equalizer late in the second period when Saskatchewan's Jessica Anderson was assessed a two-minute penalty for head contact, but the Cougars could not convert on the power play.
Regina finished 0-for-1 with the player advantage, while Saskatchewan went 0-for-3. Nurani's first-period marker ultimately stood as the difference, giving the Huskies the victory and splitting the weekend series between the provincial rivals.
