Game Recap: Rams Football |

Calgary escapes with 14-13 win over No. 10 Regina

Dinos hold off Rams after last-second field goal hits upright

QUICKLY
  • A 22-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the game struck the right upright as the Calgary Dinos hung on for a 14-13 victory over the No. 10-ranked Regina Rams on Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rams opened the scoring with three Gorniak field goals, getting kicks from 32 and 39 yards in the first quarter before his 17-yard field goal early in the second put Regina up 9-0.
  • Calgary answered with all 11 of its first-half points in the final six minutes of the second quarter. Boaz Comeau connected on a 49-yard field goal, then added a single on a missed 45-yard attempt to cut Regina's lead to 9-4. The Dinos took their first lead of the game with just over a minute remaining in the half, as David Jordan connected with Matt Sibley for gains of 11 and 40 yards before Gavin Weiss finished off the 65-yard drive with a four-yard run for what would be the lone touchdown of the game for either team.
  • The Dinos extended their lead to 14-9 late in the third quarter on a 15-yard Comeau field goal. Calgary's defence intercepted Rams quarterback Owen Sieben twice in the third quarter, with the second turnover leading to Comeau's field goal.
  • Regina began its comeback early in the fourth. Gorniak's fourth field goal of the afternoon, this one from 34 yards out, pulled the Rams to within two. Regina then picked up a single point on a Gorniak punt to make it a 14-13 game.
  • The Rams gave themselves one final chance when they got the ball back at midfield after Tyleon Ocaya stripped the ball from Calgary's Trey Loupelle following a completed pass. Carson Sombach scooped up the fumble and the Rams' offence took over from midfield with 1:46 to go. Regina drove into field goal range from there, with Carter Ashman breaking off runs of 14 and nine yards to get deep into Calgary territory. Gorniak came on for a 22-yard attempt to win the game, but his kick struck the right upright as time expired.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Ashman led a Regina rushing attack that finished with 213 yards, carrying 18 times for 110 yards. Marshall Erichsen added 63 yards on 11 carries, while Christian Katende rushed seven times for 40 yards. Ethan Graham, Connor Klassen, Will Templeton, Nnadozie Marendiukobianwa, and Miceal Astone were the starters at offensive line.
  • Linebackers Liam LaBelle and Owen Zimmer both had 6.5 tackles to lead the Rams. Zimmer had the game's lone sack when he hauled down Calgary's David Jordan for a nine-yard loss early in the fourth quarter.
  • Sieben finished 12-for-26 for 123 yards. Nicholas Sirleaf was Regina's leading receiver with four catches for 53 yards.
  • Gorniak scored all 13 of Regina's points. He hit field goals from 32, 39, 17, and 34 yards out in addition to his fourth-quarter punt single.
  • Regina's Darius Crandell made his second consecutive start at wide receiver and added three catches for 39 yards.

STANDINGS
  • The Rams (2-3) now sit in fifth place in Canada West, tied with Calgary but behind the fourth-place Dinos on the head-to-head tiebreaker. UBC and Manitoba are both one game ahead at 3-2, while Saskatchewan heads into the bye week alone in first place at 4-1.

NEXT UP
  • With the conference-wide bye next weekend, the Rams will return to action next Thursday, Oct. 15. They'll host the Alberta Golden Bears at Leibel Field.
