Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Sunday shootout win gives Cougars split against Saskatchewan

Grove scores in sixth round to ice road win for Regina

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's hockey team finished with a weekend split with Saskatchewan after a 4-1 home loss on Friday followed by a 3-2 shootout win on Sunday in Saskatoon.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Friday's game opened with three first-period goals by Saskatchewan as Jayde Cadieux scored twice in the span of 25 seconds and Sara Kendall added a power play goal just three minutes later to put the visitors up 3-0 after a first period which saw them outshoot Regina by a 17-4 margin.
  • Kaylee Dyer brought the Cougars closer with her fourth goal of the season, all of which have been scored the past two weekends. With the Cougars on a power play, Dyer walked in from the right faceoff dot and wired a shot over the glove of Saskatchewan goalie Colby Wilson to make it a two-goal game.
  • But the Cougars weren't able to draw any closer. Saskatchewan ended any chance of a late U of R comeback with Kahlen Wisener's goal with just over a minute to go, cementing a 4-1 victory for the Huskies.
  • Amy Swayze came on in relief of Regina starting netminder Natalie Williamson, who was injured midway through the second. Swayze stopped 20 of the 21 shots she faced.

SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Originally scheduled for Saturday, the second game of the weekend was pushed back a day due to travel conditions in the southern half of the province.
  • Paris Oleksyn got Saskatchewan on the board just 33 seconds into the game, but the Cougars replied twice late in the first period. Shaylee Scraba tied it up after deflecting a Julianne Girardin point shot, then Makena Kushniruk scored off her own rebound to send the Cougars into the first intermission up 2-1.
  • Wisener scored for Saskatchewan to tie it up midway through the second, and that turned out to be the final goal of regulation as the teams played a scoreless third.
  • Overtime also solved nothing, sending the teams into what would be a lengthy shootout. Regina's Cassidy Peters and Saskatchewan's Sara Kendall both had successful attempts in the second round, and no one else scored until the sixth when Trinity Grove faked a shot, deked to her forehand, and snuck the winner through Wilson.

STANDINGS
  • The two points were critical for the Cougars, who are now 8-12-4 with 20 points on the season and 4 games remaining on the Canada West schedule.
  • Regina sits four points behind fourth-place Manitoba (9-9-6) and five points back of Saskatchewan (10-9-5) as the Huskies remain in control of the East Division's third and final postseason spot.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars host Manitoba in what will be their final home games of the 2025-26 season this Friday (7:00 PM) and Saturday (5:00) PM at The Co-operators Centre.
  • Regina's conference schedule concludes the following weekend at Trinity Western on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14.
