Cougars close season with U-Prairie Challenge series against Saskatchewan

Huskies take four-set wins on Thursday, Friday over Regina

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's volleyball team closed out its 2025-26 season with a pair of four-set losses to Saskatchewan on Thursday night and Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

THURSDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cougars jumped out to a 19-13 lead in the opening set, only to have Saskatchewan score seven of the next nine points to get to within one at 21-20. Regina head coach Prateek Yadav called a timeout and the Cougars came out of the break with three consecutive points to go up 24-20, then Jordy McEachern's kill on the U of R's third attempt at set point gave the home side a 25-22 match-opening win.
  • The second set saw the Cougars lead by a slim margin for most of the frame before Regina went ahead 24-23 to give them set point. Saskatchewan evaded that thanks to a Taryn Hannah kill, and another McEachern kill extended the set after the Huskies had gone up 25-24. But Saskatchewan made good on its second attempt at set point as Keely Anderson and Jessica Bergstrom got up to block a Bailey Balaberda attack which gave the Huskies a 27-25 win.
  • After the two tight opening sets, the rest of the match was all Huskies. Saskatchewan hit .485 as a team while winning the third by a 25-16 margin, then cruised to a 25-18 win in the fourth to clinch the victory.
  • Balaberda finished with a match-high 17 kills and added 11 digs to register one of Regina's two double-doubles. Cassadi Klapak had the other as she dished out 35 assists while also collecting 18 digs and putting down six kills.
  • Saskatchewan libero Mary Rioflorido led all players with a 25-dig performance in the four-set match.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • In front of a raucous crowd of over 800 fans at the CKHS, the Cougars led from wire to wire in the first set and held off a late Saskatchewan charge as a block by McEachern and Piper Harkness gave Regina a 25-23 win in the opener.
  • The second set was tight until Saskatchewan took control with six straight points with Aidan Woloshyn on serve. That run put the Huskies up 19-13 and the visitors went on to a 25-21 victory which evened the match at one set apiece.
  • Friday's script followed the exact same as Thursday's as the close opening two sets gave way to decisive Saskatchewan wins in the third and fourth. The Huskies held Regina to a negative hitting percentage in a 25-12 third-set victory, then clinched the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth.
  • Fiona Little had a team-leading nine kills for the Cougars and also paced the team with 10 digs. McEachern neared triple-double territory with nine digs, eight kills, and eight blocks.
  • As a team, the Cougars collected a total of 17 blocks. Harkness led the way with 10, McEachern added eight, and Zoey Thompson had seven including a solo block.
  • Anderson, Bergstrom, Hannah, and Rosetta Cyr all collected 11 kills for Saskatchewan, which finishes the Canada West schedule with a 12-8 record.

SENIOR NIGHT
  • The Cougars honoured six seniors following Friday's match as Balaberda, Harkness, Klapak, Little, McEachern, and libero McKenzie Keibel are all expected to graduate from the program.

NEXT YEAR
  • Leading the group of returners for 2026-27 will be Samantha Krausher, Anna Schultz, Reese Stroeder, and Zoey Thompson. All four of those players saw significant floor time for the Cougars this season including Thompson, who started all 20 Canada West matches and had 74 kills while finishing second on the team with 67 blocks. Stroeder registered 66 digs while appearing in 62 of the team's 71 sets as a libero, while Krausher and Schultz finished second and third on the team with 157 kills and 121 kills, respectively.
