Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars fall to UBC in Canada West semifinals

Regina eligible for at-large berth to nationals, but will need favourites to advance

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's basketball team lost a 74-68 decision to UBC on Friday night in a Canada West semifinal game at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cougars scored the first six points of the game, but UBC almost immediately replied with a 10-0 run to jump into the lead with the first of what would be 11 lead changes during the contest.
  • Regina led 22-17 after the opening quarter, but UBC outscored Regina by a 25-15 margin and went into the halftime break with a 42-37 advantage.
  • The score stayed tight through three quarters, and the fourth featured four lead changes before UBC pulled away for the win late. A triple by Izzi Fust tied it up at 63-63 just past the midway point of the fourth, but UBC took the lead for good with six straight points over the next three minutes. The Cougars got the lead down to three points on two different occasions late in the game, but Regina wasn't able to get a defensive stop and a pair of Jaeli Ibbetson free throws with 17 seconds left all but sealed the win for UBC.
  • Belmore piled up a game-high 28 points for the Cougars while also grabbing eight rebounds. Cara Misskey finished the game with 14 points, five steals, and four assists.
  • Ibbetson and Olivia Weekes both had double-doubles for UBC. Ibbetson had 18 points and 12 rebounds while Weekes had 13 points and 14 rebounds.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
  • UBC earns one of Canada West's two automatic berths to the 2026 U SPORTS Final 8 in Quebec City and will now await Saturday's Calgary/Saskatchewan semifinal in Saskatoon. The Thunderbirds will host the winner of that semifinal in the Canada West championship game next weekend.
  • Regina will be eligible for an at-large bid to the U SPORTS Final 8. The Cougars will be cheering for New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Queen's, and Toronto Metropolitan to all earn automatic berths to the tournament.
