University of Regina's men's hockey coach
Trevor Keeper announced Thursday that the Cougars have received a commitment from Melville Millionaires defenceman Boston Harkness for the 2026-27 season.
Harkness was named the SJHL's Saskatchewan Player of the Year and a league first-team all-star after an impressive 2025-26 campaign which saw him collect 10 goals, 38 assists, and 48 points in 54 regular season games.
"Boston is one of the most complete defencemen in Junior A hockey," Keeper said. "He wins a high percentage of puck battles, has an offensive touch, and has size and skating ability. Boston is a player that we think can not only contribute immediately, but also continue to develop as he makes the jump to U SPORTS. We're thrilled that he has committed to the Cougars."
Harkness played his entire four-season junior career with Melville, finishing with 223 regular season games to rank eighth in Millionaires history and first among active SJHL players in that category. He scored 16 goals, 79 assists, and 95 points in those 223 games while also appearing in 14 postseason games with Melville. Harkness, a product of nearby Emerald Park, developed with Prairie Storm Minor Hockey and played a pair of U18 AAA seasons with the Estevan Bears before his time in Melville.
Planning to enroll in the Faculty of Business Administration, Harkness will continue a strong family connection to the University of Regina. His older sister, Piper Harkness, recently completed a strong five-year career as a middle with the Cougars women's volleyball team which saw her rank among Canada West's leaders in blocks in both of her final two seasons.
Harkness becomes the second defenceman to commit to the Cougars for next year, joining Weyburn Red Wings blueliner Rylan Pearce. The Cougars have also received commitments from forward/defenceman Kurt Rookes (Waywayseecappo Wolverines) and forwards Noah Asmundson (Estevan Bruins), Merik Boles (Niverville Nighthawks), Riley Fequet (Winkler Flyers), and Ben Roulette (Waywayseecappo).
