University of Regina men's hockey head coach
Trevor Keeper announced Friday that forwards Brett Calhoon (Langley Rivermen), Rhett Platt (Portage Terriers), and Jye Zawatsky (Yorkton Terriers) have committed to the Cougars, rounding out the program's recruiting class for the 2026-27 season.
Â
With the additions, the Cougars are expected to have 13 first-year players on next season's roster.
Â
Calhoon, a native of Kamloops, B.C., spent parts of three seasons in the Western Hockey League with Medicine Hat, Kelowna, and Red Deer before finishing his junior career in the BCHL. He split the 2025-26 campaign between Brooks and Langley after beginning the year in the WHL.
Â
"Brett is a solid two-way forward with a deep junior hockey résumé," Keeper said. "He's a great skater with an elite understanding of the game. Brett has played under some excellent coaching, and his on-ice intelligence will help make him a successful player at the U SPORTS level."
Â
Platt enjoyed a breakout season with Portage in 2025-26, registering 23 goals and 47 assists to finish tied for sixth in MJHL scoring with 70 points. A Regina product, Platt played for the Regina Pat Canadians in 2022-23 before beginning his junior career with Virden and Pilot Butte in 2023-24. He was acquired by Portage midway through his 19-year-old season.
Â
Platt also has a strong connection to the Cougars program, as his older brother Bryce suited up for the team from 2019 through 2023.
Â
"Rhett has a great scoring touch and sees the ice extremely well," Keeper said. "His anticipation allows him to be in the right place at the right time, and he's also very responsible defensively. We're excited to have a hometown player proudly wear the Cougar jersey."
Â
Zawatsky closed out a highly productive three-year junior career with Yorkton, highlighted by a standout 2025-26 season. He scored 28 goals and added 43 assists to finish third in SJHL scoring with 71 points, then recorded 17 points in 17 playoff games while helping the Terriers reach the Canterra Seeds Cup final.
Â
Over 151 career SJHL regular season games, Zawatsky accumulated 52 goals and 86 assists for 138 points.
Â
"Jye is a very quick player with great offensive awareness and a high hockey IQ," Keeper said. "He's also a tenacious checker who can strip pucks and create turnovers. Jye will be a great addition to our team."
Â
Calhoon, Platt, and Zawatsky join previously announced commits Noah Asmundson, Merik Boles, Riley Fequet, Otto Hanson, Boston Harkness, Eric Hoiness, Matthew Keller, Rylan Pearce, Kurt Rookes, and Ben Roulette. The group will be the largest collection of first-year players on a U of R roster since the 2011-12 Cougars also had 13 rookies.
