No. 4 Rams drop 25-20 decision to UBC

Second-half comeback lifts Thunderbirds past Rams in Vancouver

QUICKLY
  • The No. 4 University of Regina Rams were outscored 15-0 in the second half and fell by a 25-20 score to UBC on Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rams engineered an 11-play, 86-yard drive on the game's first possession which featured Noah Pelletier hitting four different receivers and Christian Katende finishing it off with a 12-yard touchdown run.
  • UBC took the lead after a field goal and a 70-yard touchdown rush by Marvyn Larozar, putting them up 10-7 after the opening quarter.
  • After back-to-back field goals by Ty Gorniak put the Rams back on top, Carson Sombach made a huge play to pick off a Drew Viotto pass near midfield and run it all the way down to UBC's six. Two plays later, Pelletier hit Kaleb Senz for an eight-yard major and the Rams took a 20-10 lead into the halftime break.
  • UBC scored the only points of the third quarter. Viotto had a big 46-yard completion to Zach Patfield, which set up a 23-yard heave to Santiago Llarena for a touchdown.
  • The Thunderbirds scored again early in the fourth when Larozar hit the end zone for the second time with a 22-yard run on a counter, putting UBC up 24-20 with 12 minutes remaining. A single off a missed field goal later extended the Thunderbirds' lead to 25-20.
  • The Rams took over with 1:43 remaining trailing by five and drove deep into UBC territory to give themselves a chance at the win, but penalties ultimately proved costly. Regina advanced to the UBC 21 with time for one final play, and Pelletier's pass to the end zone was intercepted with UBC initially flagged for pass interference. The Rams were also called for three penalties on the play, however, moving the ball back to the UBC 41 for one untimed down. Pelletier's final pass to the end zone fell incomplete, sealing the win for the Thunderbirds.

GAME NOTES
  • Brandon Wong had two sacks for the Rams, both in the second quarter, for a total of 19 yards. He brought down Viotto for a nine-yard loss and Alex La Vecchia for a 10-yard loss. They were the Rams' first two sacks of the 2026 campaign, and the first multiple-sack performance by a Rams player since Anthony Bennett had three in a game during the 2022 season.
  • Tyleon Ocaya had two pass breakups, both of which came when he broke up pass attempts in the end zone.
  • Sombach's interception was the fifth of his career. One more pick will put him into the U of R's all-time top 10 in that category.
  • Pelletier finished 20-for-38 for the Rams, throwing for a total of 253 yards including the touchdown to Senz.
  • Blake Laidlaw had four catches for a game-high 60 yards, while Nicholas Sirleaf led the U of R with five catches and finished with 44 yards. Renzel Arinaza had three catches for 49 yards.
  • Katende finished with 11 rushes for 66 yards, with Carter Ashman running seven times for 37 yards.
  • Larozar was the offensive catalyst for UBC, finishing with 208 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

STANDINGS
  • The Rams, UBC, and Saskatchewan are now mired in a three-way tie for first place in the Canada West standings at 2-1.
  • The three-way tie will become a four-way tie after the conclusion of Saturday's game, as the winner of the Calgary/Manitoba game will also move to 2-1.

NEXT UP
  • The Rams will host Saskatchewan next Saturday in a U-Prairie Challenge matchup at Mosaic Stadium. Game time is set for 2:00 PM.
