No. 5 Saskatchewan holds off No. 7 Rams for 38-31 win

Sixth consecutive U-Prairie Challenge game decided by a single possession

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina Rams were unable to complete a fourth-quarter comeback as the No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies held on for a 38-31 victory on Saturday afternoon in a U-Prairie Challenge game at Mosaic Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Regina's first drive resulted in a Ty Gorniak field goal, Saskatchewan scored on its next possession with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Anton Amundrud to Dawson Lennea. Rams starting quarterback Owen Sieben then engineered a 14-play, 77-yard touchdown drive which took a full 7:28 off the clock and finished with a Carter Ashman one-yard run on the final play of the first quarter.
  • The two defences then traded big plays in the second quarter. Chase Murray intercepted an Amundrud pass in the end zone to put an end to a U of S drive but just four plays later, the Huskies' defence evened the score. Nathan Casimir dislodged the ball on an Ashman run and Porter Hanson scooped up the fumble and returned it 46 yards for the touchdown.
  • The Rams got those seven points back immediately, with a big 27-yard run by Marshall Erichsen leading directly to a brilliant 26-yard touchdown catch by Nicholas Sirleaf to put the Rams up 17-14. Saskatchewan got a 30-yard field goal late in the quarter to send the two teams into the halftime break tied 17-17.
  • Saskatchewan took control in the third, scoring touchdowns on three consecutive possessions while holding the Rams without a first down in the quarter. Javin Boynton scored twice on one-yard plunges, while Lennea hauled in his second touchdown of the game on a 37-yard reception after Amundrud managed to get the ball away under heavy pressure from the Rams' front.
  • Just when it looked like Saskatchewan had taken complete control of the game, a special teams miscue gave the Rams life. The Huskies lined up for a 34-yard field goal, but a high snap allowed Murray to scoop up the loose ball and race 72 yards for his first U SPORTS touchdown.
  • Regina's defence then forced two consecutive two-and-outs, and a 12-play, 82-yard touchdown drive pulled the Rams to within one score. A roughing-the-passer penalty for a low hit on Sieben moved the ball to the Saskatchewan one, and Ashman finished the drive with his second one-yard touchdown of the game.
  • The Rams got the ball back with 1:15 to go and a chance to tie. Sieben completed four passes to move the ball inside Saskatchewan's 30, but the Rams couldn't convert on a 3rd-and-7 situation and turned it over on downs.

NOTES
  • Four teams entered Week 4 in a tie for first place in the Canada West standings at 2-1. Saskatchewan and UBC remain tied for top spot with 3-1 records, and Regina now sits third with a 2-2 record.
  • Fourth-place Manitoba is also 2-2.
  • Saturday's contest was the sixth consecutive meeting between the two teams decided by one possession. Each of the previous five games had been settled by five or fewer points.
  • Saskatchewan finished with a 408-339 advantage in total yards.

RAMS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Murray's 72-yard touchdown was the third longest fumble return in U of R history. Michael Stefanovic had a school-record 108-yard fumble return during the 2015 season, while current defensive coordinator Sheldon Gray had a 75-yard return back in 2002. Both of those returns were also in games against Saskatchewan.
  • Returning to the lineup for the first time since suffering an injury late in the 2025 season, Erichsen finished as the game's leading rusher with 11 carries for 80 yards.
  • Sieben finished 22-for-34 for 196 yards and a touchdown in his first game since being injured in Week 1. Sirleaf was his leading receiver, finishing with seven catches for 87 yards including the 26-yard major in the second.
  • Tyleon Ocaya was Regina's leading tackler, finishing with four solo and five assisted. Liam LaBelle and John Stevens both had a tackle for loss, while Brad Rodin and Owen Zimmer shared another one. Kaeden Brennan earned Regina's lone pass breakup.

NEXT UP
  • The Rams are back in action next week, hitting the road to square off with Calgary in a Saturday afternoon game. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM at McMahon Stadium.
