Desiree Ates joined the University of Regina's women's volleyball team's coaching staff as an assistant prior to the 2018-19 season.

Ates played only the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons with the Cougars, but is the program's all-time leader with 3.58 kills per set and ranks eighth in school history with 587 kills. She was a second-team All-Canadian in 2014 after collecting 347 kills, which at the time was a Canada West single-season record. Following her high school career at Sheldon-Williams Collegiate in Regina, Ates also played at Pasco-Hernando Community College and the University of New Hampshire before her two years at the U of R.
