Chantelle Whitehead's goal in the 11th minute stood up as the winner as the Trinity Western Spartans took a 1-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon in Canada West women's soccer action at the U of R Field.

Whitehead's goal came on a free kick from about 22 yards out. She fired a rocket that hit just inside the left post, and Cougars goalkeeper Michelle Anderson had no chance of stopping it.

Veronika Rogina made seven saves for the Spartans to record the shutout victory. Anderson made eight saves for Regina.

Tarina Mayer fired five shots at Trinity's net, four of which were saved by Rogina.

The match was played in near-freezing temperatures, with the familiar northwesterly wind howling at over 50 km/h.

The win gives the Spartans a 9-2-3 record for the season and a second-place finish in the conference. The Cougars finish the year at 0-10-4.
