The University of Regina's women's soccer team plays its first home matches today and tomorrow since the opening weekend of the season, as the Cougars will host Victoria and UBC in two Canada West games at the U of R Field.
The Cougars will be looking to regain the form they displayed in the opening four matches of the season, when they recorded draws against both Calgary and Lethbridge and played well against the Canada West-leading Manitoba Bisons. Since then, the Cougars have suffered four consecutive road losses and now sport an 0-6-2 record on the season.
Regina allowed just four goals in its first four matches. Much of the credit for the improved defence was due to the work of fullback
Katie Santha and goaltender
Michelle Anderson, but both players were injured during the road trip to Alberta and Saskatchewan two weekends ago. Santha remains out with a knee injury, but Cougars head coach
Bob Maltman expects Anderson to return from her hamstring injury this weekend. The addition of Anderson will be a help to the Cougars, as she sports a 1.29 goals-against average, an .878 save percentage, and a shutout in five matches this season.
No. 7-ranked Victoria enters the weekend with a 5-2-1 record and in second place in the conference. The Vikes have five players with three goals scored this season, including Sarah Clark, Moira Hood, Kaitlyn Hunter, Leah Quinlan, and Janelle Smith. Stephanie Parker has a 0.88 goals-against average and three shutouts for Victoria this season.
UBC (4-1-3) will play Manitoba on Saturday before heading to Regina on Sunday. The Thunderbirds sit in third place in Canada West with 15 points, just one back of Victoria and one ahead of Trinity Western. UBC's Caitlin Davie is among the league leaders in scoring, as the third-year midfielder has seven goals in the Thunderbirds' first eight games. Jaclyn Dunnett has recorded four shutouts, which leads all Canada West keepers.
The Cougars will make their final road trip of the year next weekend, with matches at Lethbridge and Calgary.
