The University of Regina's women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon against the No. 10-ranked UBC Thunderbirds in a Canada West match at the U of R Field.
The teams might have been battling the elements as much as each other during the match. The temperature was a balmy 11 celsius, but a steady rain combined with a southeast wind gusting to over 50 km/h made for difficult playing conditions on the field turf.
Michelle Anderson was superb in goal again for the Cougars, making 11 saves to secure her second shutout of the season. Jaclyn Dunnett was equal to the task for UBC, as the Thunderbird goalkeeper was called upon to make three saves during the match.
“We played a very good game defensively in terms of giving them their half,” Cougars head coach
Bob Maltman said. “We tried to have a similar game plan as the one we employed against Victoria yesterday, and we executed well. We did a good job of keeping shots from well out for the most part, and our midfielders worked hard to slide over and compress space to limit their operation room. Considering our results from last year, this is a significant stride forward for us.”
UBC outshot Regina by a 23-4 margin. Chelsea Stang had five shots on net and nine in total for the Thunderbirds, while Natalie Hirayama had eight shots and three on net.
UBC's record moves to 5-1-4. The Thunderbirds move into sole possession of second place in Canada West, jumping ahead of the Manitoba Bisons, who lost 1-0 to the Victoria Vikes on Sunday. The Cougars are now 0-7-3 on the year.
The Cougars will have a week off before returning to action at Lethbridge and Calgary on Oct. 18 and 19. UBC will host Fraser Valley and Trinity Western next weekend.
