The University of Regina's men's basketball team completed a weekend sweep over Winnipeg on Saturday night, defeating the Wesmen by a score of 82-69 in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars, who led by just four points at halftime, exploded for a 22-4 run during the third quarter and led by 20 going into the fourth quarter. Winnipeg outscored Regina by a 23-16 margin in the final period, but never really threatened to get back into the ball game.

For the second consecutive night, Jeff Lukomski scored 25 points to lead the Cougars. The third-year guard did the majority of his damage from beyond the arc, going 7-for-14 from three-point land.

Kris Heshka had a solid game down low for Regina, ending up with 20 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes on the floor. Heshka, who shot 7-for-12 from the field and 6-for-7 from the line, brought the crowd to its feet after a huge put-back dunk off of a missed Jordan McFarlen layup during Regina's big run in the third quarter.

Jamal Williams (12) and Paul Schubach (12) also broke into double figures in points for the Cougars. Williams fell just short of the double-double with nine rebounds on the night, while Schubach had a game-high six assists.

Nick Lother had a game-high 27 points for the Wesmen. He hit 11 of his 19 field goals and was 4-for-11 from behind the three-point line. Mike James and Peter Lumuro both had 15 points for Winnipeg.

The win gives the Cougars a 2-0 record and an early tie with the Brandon Bobcats for the lead in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen fall to 1-3 on the season.

Winnipeg returns home next weekend to face Fraser Valley (3-1) and Thompson Rivers (1-3). The Cougars will play at Lethbridge (1-3) and Calgary (3-1) next weekend.

NOTES: Lukomski scored the 600th point of his career on Saturday … Williams needs just two more points to hit the same milestone.
