The University of Regina's women's basketball team suffered a 67-61 loss to the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
A layup by Amy Ogidan broke a 60-60 tie with 48 seconds left in the game, giving Winnipeg the lead for good. The Wesmen then hit five of their six free throw attempts in the final minute to seal the victory.
The win improves the No. 6-ranked Wesmen's record to 3-1, good for the early lead in the Great Plains Division. The Cougars, who entered the weekend ranked No. 8 in the CIS, drop to 1-1 with the loss.
Ogidan, who shot 10-for-13 from the line and 5-for-12 from the field, led all scorers with 21 points on the night. Three other Wesmen also broke into double figures in scoring, including Jessica Stromberg (12), Caitlin Gooch (10), and Randie Gibson (10). Gooch also had six rebounds, four assists, and three steals for Winnipeg.
Rebecca Schmidt led the Cougars with 16 points, while
Gabrielle Gheyssen helped out with ten.
Jessica Lynch fell one bucket short of a double-double, ending up with eight points and ten rebounds for the game.
Winnipeg had a seven-point lead with two minutes remaining, but the Cougars went on a 7-0 run capped by two
Carmen Stewart free throws to draw even with just under a minute to play. After Ogidan's layup and her first successful free throw, Regina's
Stacey Walker missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game at 63.
The Wesmen, who didn't trail at any point during the ball game, held a 34-27 lead at halftime. They'll prepare for home games against Fraser Valley (2-2) and Thompson Rivers (2-2) next weekend.
The Cougars will hit Lethbridge (0-4) and Calgary (3-1) next weekend during a two-game road trip against Central Division opponents.
NOTES: Winnipeg's Stromberg was assessed a technical foul in the third quarter for throwing the ball at
Chelsea Cassano.
