The University of Regina's women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie against the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns in a gritty affair on Sunday afternoon in Canada West action at the U of R Field.
Second-year goalkeeper
Michelle Anderson made eight saves to record her first CIS shutout and preserve the tie for the Cougars. Anderson made three saves in the first half and three saves in the second half. Megan Lumley, a Canada West first-team all-star last season, made five saves for the Pronghorns.
A brisk north wind dictated much of the play on Sunday. The Cougars outshot the Pronghorns 9-5 going with the wind, but were outshot 11-2 in the second half going against it.
Both teams had several scoring chances. The Cougars' best chance might have come in the 15th minute, when third-year midfielder
Chelsie Dorosh lifted a ball over a charging Lumley, but the ball sailed just wide of the net. Lethbridge had nine corner kicks – all of which came in the second half – but the Pronghorns weren't able to convert on any of them.
The tie moves Regina's record to 0-0-2 on the season. With two points, the Cougars are alone in fifth place in Canada West after the first weekend of the season.
Lethbridge moves to 0-1-1 on the season and will prepare for home games next weekend against Saskatchewan (0-1-1) and Alberta (1-1-0).
Next weekend, the Cougars will travel to Winnipeg to square off with the No. 10-ranked Manitoba Bisons, who defeated both Lethbridge and Calgary this weekend to start the season off with a 2-0-0 mark.
