Four Cougars scored in double digits as the University of Regina's men's basketball team cruised to a 76-57 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The win improves Regina's Great Plains Division-leading record to 9-6 on the season. The Cougars remain two games up on Brandon (7-8), as the Bobcats also chalked up a victory on Friday night after defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies.
Jeff Lukomski led the way for the Cougars, hitting five of his nine three-pointers and scoring a game-high 19 points.
Paul Schubach had a double-double, scoring 16 and leading all players with ten rebounds.
Jamal Williams had 15 points, six assists, and four steals for Regina, while third-year guard
Jordan McFarlen chipped in with a career-high ten points in 23 minutes on the floor.
“I was extremely pleased with our 'D' tonight,” Cougars head coach
James Hillis said. “You give yourself opportunities to win when you play defence like that. In the second half especially, we did a good job of getting out and challenging shooters. I'm pleased we got it done at that end of the court.”
Alberta, which shot just 33.8% from the floor on Friday, was led by C.G. Morrison's 15 points and five steals. The Golden Bears fall to 8-7 on the season, but remain two games up on the Huskies for second place in the Central Division.
The Cougars, who were playing their first game at the CKHS in over two months, will return to their home gym on Saturday night to square off against Saskatchewan (7-8). Alberta will travel to Brandon for a game against the Bobcats on Saturday.
NOTES: Lukomski's five three-pointers bring his league-leading season total up to 57 … with seven games still remaining on the schedule, Lukomski needs just ten more to tie Joel Hunter's U of R single-season record of 67, set during the 2005-06 season … Lukomski is also just 37 shy of Hunter's U of R career record of 195.
