The No. 2-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team fell to 9-2 on the season after dropping an 83-56 decision to the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night in Langley, B.C. The loss snapped the Cougars' eight-game conference winning streak, as the team hadn't lost a Canada West game since Nov. 1 against Winnipeg.
The Spartans were led by the long-range shooting exploits of fourth-year guard Katie Haworth, who set a Trinity Western record with eight three-pointers during the win. Haworth, who was 8-for-12 from beyond the arc, ended up with a game-high 27 points and added five assists and three steals. Lauren Doubroff had 12 points and eight rebounds for TWU, while Becky Atkinson chipped in with 10 points in 19 minutes on the floor.
Trinity Western led Friday's game from start to finish, opening the contest on a 10-0 run before the Cougars finally got on the board just before the five-minute mark of the first quarter. The Spartans led by ten after the first quarter and took a commanding 21-point lead into halftime. The Cougars scored the first six points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 15 points, but that was as close as they would come in the second half. Trinity Western extended its lead to 25 points after three quarters and coasted to victory in the fourth.
Regina's top scorers were
Jessica Lynch and
Rebecca Schmidt, who both ended up with 10 points. The Cougars were outrebounded for just the second time this season, as the Spartans held a 46-40 edge on the boards.
The Cougars will finish off their two-game road trip on Saturday night against the No. 1-ranked Simon Fraser Clan. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time.
