A fourth-quarter rally by the University of Regina's men's basketball team fell short, as the Cougars were defeated by a score of 87-80 by the Simon Fraser Clan on Saturday night in a Canada West game at Burnaby, B.C.
The Cougars trailed by as many as 16 points late in the third quarter, but Regina went on a 15-6 run to cut the Clan's lead to just four with seven minutes remaining. The Cougars pulled to within four points after three
Paul Schubach free throws with a minute remaining, but Simon Fraser put the contest away with six points in the final minute.
Schubach led all scorers with 28 points. The fourth-year guard was 7-for-19 from the field, but connected on 13 of his 14 free throws.
Jamal Williams recorded the game's lone double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down a season-high 17 rebounds for the Cougars.
Matt Kuzminski, younger brother of former U of R forward Drew Kuzminski, led the Clan with 21 points. Sean Burke scored 19 for Simon Fraser, while Gregory Gillies and Greg Wallis each chipped in with 14. Simon Fraser improves to 8-5 on the season with the win.
The Cougars' poor outside shooting proved to be the difference during the game, as they connected on just six of their 32 three-pointers. With seven threes, the Clan hit just one more than Regina, but did so on 12 less attempts.
The game featured two brothers squaring off against each other, as U of R first-year guard
Sterling Nostedt found himself guarding his older brother, Simon Fraser guard Jordan Nostedt, on several possessions. Sterling ended up with six points and a team-leading four assists in 27 minutes on the floor, while Jordan had six points and four rebounds in 14 minutes.
The Cougars fall to 6-6 with the loss, but still hold first place in the Great Plains Division. Regina will be back in action next weekend with a pair of road games at Manitoba (3-7).
NOTES: Schubach's 28 points equals his career high, set on Jan. 5, 2008 against Fraser Valley ...
