Cougars face division rivals Manitoba

1/30/2009 2:32:21 PM

Women's Preview

Ranked No. 4 in the CIS, the Cougars already have their fourth Great Plains Division regular season title clinched and will be looking to finish off the season on a strong note with four home games remaining in the conference schedule.

This weekend, the Cougars will take on the Manitoba Bisons, who hold a 7-11 record and will almost certainly finish in third place in the division and take on Winnipeg in the division semifinals. Regina and Manitoba met twice in early January, with the Cougars coming up with 69-61 and 91-58 road wins.

With first place in the division clinched, the Cougars will host the winner of the division semifinals on Feb. 19, 20, and (if necessary) 21 at the CKHS, with the winner earning an automatic berth to the Canada West Final Four, which will likely be held at Simon Fraser.

Coming into the weekend, the two longtime rivals have met 154 times in the regular season, with the Bisons holding an 81-73 advantage.

Men's Preview

Coming into Saturday, the Brandon Bobcats (11-8) hold a 1½-game lead atop the Great Plains Division over the Cougars, who sit at 9-9.

To finish in first place in the division, the Cougars will likely need to win at least one game against the Bisons (5-14) this weekend, then sweep the Bobcats next weekend at the CKHS.

The Cougars will be looking to snap their three-game losing skid, as they lost to Saskatchewan at home on Jan. 17 before losing twice to Winnipeg on the road last weekend.

The Bisons come into the weekend with a half-game lead on Winnipeg for the third and final playoff position in the division. Expect a wild display of long-range shots this weekend, as Manitoba is the runaway conference leader with 570 three-point attempts on the season. The Cougars, by comparison, have attempted just 382.

NOTES: With 869 career points, Jamal Williams needs just 18 to pass current head coach James Hillis on the U of R's all-time points list.
