The University of Regina's men's basketball team surged to a 100-66 victory over Great Plains Division rival Manitoba on Saturday afternoon in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Regina led by six points after the first quarter and extended that lead to 15 at halftime. The hometown Cougars then exploded in the third quarter, going on a 27-5 run to blow the game wide open. The Bisons scored 30 points in the fourth quarter against Regina's bench, but it wasn't enough to recover from a deficit that reached as many as 39 points early in the final period.

Jeff Lukomski went 8-for-12 from the field and hit on three of his six three-point attempts and scored a team-high 23 points for the Cougars. Jamal Williams scored 11 points and added ten rebounds for a double-double, while Kris Heshka fell just short of a double-double with 11 rebounds and nine points.

Eric Garcia led the Bisons with 23 points, while Nathan Dixon chipped in with 13. Of Manitoba's 73 field goal attempts, 33 were shot from beyond the arc. The Bisons ended up hitting 11 of them, led by Garcia's five.

The win improves Regina's record to 10-9. Regardless of the outcome of Sunday's contest against the Bisons, the Cougars will need to sweep Brandon next weekend to claim the Great Plains Division regular season title.

Manitoba drops to 4-15 with the loss and are now a full game back of Winnipeg for the third and final playoff spot in the division.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon at the CKHS. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.

NOTES: The Cougars scored 100 points on Saturday for the first time since a 101-85 win over Winnipeg on Nov. 10, 2007.
