No one can accuse the Regina Cougars or the Manitoba Bisons of being afraid to toss up the ball from three-point range.
In a game that saw the two teams combine for an astounding 63 attempted three-pointers, the Cougars came away with a 74-68 win on Friday night to improve to 7-6 on the season.
Though not involved in the three-point exhibition,
Kris Heshka and
Jamal Williams led the Cougars with double-doubles. Heshka had 19 points and 16 rebounds, while Williams scored 13 points and pulled down 12 boards. The duo combined to grab over half of their team's rebounds, as the Cougars enjoyed a 53-28 advantage on the board.
Not surprisingly, third-year guard
Jeff Lukomski led the three-point barrage for the Cougars. Lukomski, who attempted just one two-point field goal, was 5-for-15 from beyond the arc and scored 16 points to go along with a game-high eight assists.
Marek Downarowicz was the only other Cougar to score in double digits during the game, scoring ten points for the second consecutive contest.
Two early fouls put Cougar guard
Paul Schubach into foul trouble, and he ended up with just three points and two steals in 19 minutes on the floor.
C.J. Wicker led the Bisons with a game-high 21 points and also registered seven rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Wicker (4-for-10) and Nathan Dixon (4-for-8) were Manitoba's main contributors from three-point range, as the Bisons hit 12 of their 34 attempted shots from beyond the arc.
The two teams will play again on Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
NOTES: Lukomski's 15 attempted three-pointers weren't a career high for the third-year guard, as he tossed up 17 against Thompson Rivers in late November.
