Cougars host No. 1-ranked Spartans, UBC

The University of Regina's women's soccer team returns home this weekend to host the No. 1-ranked Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday and the UBC Thunderbirds on Sunday.

The Cougars (1-5-0) went on a West Coast swing last weekend, losing 2-0 to Fraser Valley on Saturday and 2-0 to No. 3-ranked Victoria on Sunday. The team has been led offensively by first-year forward Meagan Cormier, who scored five goals in her first three CIS games and is tied for second in the conference in goals.

Last year's national champion, Trinity Western has been ranked No. 1 in the CIS poll all season long and has recorded a perfect 4-0-0 Canada West record so far. The Spartans, who have defeated Saskatchewan, Alberta, and UBC twice, have been led by first-year forward Alicia Tesan's three goals. Rebecca Ferguson and Nikki Wright have both scored twice for the Spartans, while goalkeeper Kristen Funk has a miniscule 0.75 goals-against average and two shutouts.

UBC (1-2-1) started the season ranked No. 8 in the CIS, but a draw at Alberta and consecutive losses to Trinity Western have dropped the Thunderbirds out of the poll. Like the Cougars and the Spartans, UBC has a first-year forward leading the team in scoring, as Rachael Sawer has scored three of the team's six goals. The last time UBC and Regina met was on Oct. 5 of last year, when the two teams were unable to find the back of the net in a 0-0 draw.

Following this weekend's games, the Cougars will have a week off before returning to action on Oct. 17 and 18 with a road trip to Saskatchewan and Alberta.
