Paula Fast scored the only goal of the game to lead the Manitoba Bisons to a 1-0 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday afternoon in Canada West women's soccer action at the U of R Field.
After the teams played a scoreless first 38 minutes, Fast took a pass in the middle of the 18-yard box and beat Regina keeper
Michelle Anderson to put the Bisons on the board. The goal, Fast's third of the season, was assisted by Caley Miskimmin and Julie Lafreniere.
Making just her second start of the season, Hayleigh Bell recorded the shutout for Manitoba. Bell was credited with just one save, but it was a key one. Regina forward
Meagan Cormier broke through in the 25th minute, but Bell came up to the top of the box to make a big save on the Cougars' leading scorer.
Both teams had quality scoring chances in the second half. In the 58th minute,
Chelsie Dorosh had a chance to tie the game for the Cougars but was unable to get her shot by Bell, who came up to challenge her. The Bisons had a wild flurry in the 71st minute, but after a great save by Anderson and a fortuitous bounce off the post, the Cougars were able to get out of danger.
Anderson ended up with eight saves for the Cougars.
The win improves Manitoba's record to 6-4-1 as the Bisons continue their hunt for one of the four conference postseason berths. Regina drops to 1-10-1 with the loss.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday at noon at the U of R Field.
