Cougars finish off season against Lethbridge, Calgary

10/29/2009 2:05:48 PM

After scoring a 1-0 win over Manitoba last Sunday, the University of Regina's women's soccer team will close out its 2009 season this weekend with games against Lethbridge and Calgary on Saturday and Sunday at the U of R Field.

The Cougars effectively played the role of spoiler last weekend, putting a big dent in Manitoba's playoff hopes with the win, which came thanks to Linsay Barbier's shutout and Jessica Meyer's goal in the 75th minute.

Barbier's shutout came in her first start of the season, as third-year keeper Michelle Anderson had started every game up until Sunday. Expect either Anderson or Barbier to get the call between the pipes this weekend for Regina. Meagan Cormier, who didn't play during Sunday's win after colliding with Manitoba's goalkeeper in the first half of Saturday's game, still leads the Cougars and ranks tenth in the conference with five goals on the season.

This weekend will mark the final CIS games for fifth-year players Natalia Hernandez-Solano and Nicole Renneberg. Hernandez-Solano has played in 53 games for the Cougars over the past five seasons, while Renneberg – who missed the entire 2007 season while recovering from an injury – has played in 65 matches in her career.

Lethbridge (0-12-0) enters the weekend still searching for its first win of the season. Third-year forward Andrea Nippard leads the Pronghorns with three goals this year, while Jaclyn Groten, Sherry Latrace, and Lilli Young each have two. The Cougars defeated the Pronghorns by a 3-2 score back on Sept. 13.

Calgary (5-7-0) isn't mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but the Dinos need to win twice this weekend and get help from the out-of-town scoreboard in order to qualify for one of the four playoff berths. One of Calgary's wins this season came over Regina, when the Dinos erased a late 4-1 deficit to score an improbable 5-4 win on Sept. 12.

Both of this weekend's games will kick off at noon.
