Cougars host Clan, Spartans in home openers

11/13/2009 10:26:33 AM

The University of Regina's men's basketball team plays at home for the first time during conference play this weekend, as Simon Fraser and Trinity Western both pay visits to the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars hold a 1-1 record after a weekend split at Lethbridge last weekend. Regina got a career-high 16 points from Sterling Nostedt in an 81-77 win on Friday, but ran into fourth-quarter foul trouble on Saturday and lost 70-54 to the Pronghorns.

Simon Fraser comes into Friday's game with a 1-0 record on the year. The Clan's only game was a 78-75 road win over Victoria back on Oct. 31. Fifth-year guard Kevin Shaw led Simon Fraser with 18 points in the win, while fellow fifth-year guard Matt Kuzminski – younger brother of former U of R forward Drew Kuzminski – had 17. The Clan also have Jordan Nostedt – older brother of Sterling Nostedt – on the roster.

Trinity Western enters the weekend with an 0-1 record after being dropped 71-44 by British Columbia on Oct. 30. Calvin Westbrook, in his first season with the Spartans after transferring from Cal State Stanislaus (NCAA Div. II), led the team with ten points in the loss. Jacob Doerksen, a 6'6” fifth-year forward, earned the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy last season as the CIS Player of the Year.

Both the Clan and the Spartans received votes in this week's CIS poll, but not enough to break into the top ten.

Both games are scheduled to tip off at 8:00 p.m. at the CKHS. Live video and statistics will both be available at reginacougars.com.
