Torrid shooting lifts Clan to 91-76 win over Cougars

The Simon Fraser Clan shot the lights out at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on Friday night, hitting 18 three-pointers during a 91-76 road win over the Regina Cougars in a Canada West men's basketball game.

Simon Fraser burst out of the gates on Friday, outscoring the Cougars by a 29-18 margin in the first quarter. The Clan led by as many as 15 points during the second quarter, but the U of R closed the half on a 14-3 run and trailed by just four at the break.

The Clan picked up their torrid shooting in the third, outscoring the Cougars 35-22 and scoring 11 consecutive points at one point early in the quarter. Back-to-back three-pointers by Kevin Shaw and Matt Kuzminski midway through the fourth extended a 12-point lead to 18, essentially sealing the win for Simon Fraser.

Shaw, who was 6-for-8 from the three-point line, led the way with a game-high 20 points for the Clan. Chas Kok was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and had 15 points, while Kuzminski had 14 points and ten rebounds to notch a double-double. Gregory Gillies (13) and Sean Burke (10) also broke into double figures in points for the Clan, who improve to 2-0 with the victory.

Paul Schubach led the Cougars with 15 points, while Kris Heshka had 13 points and 11 rebounds to register a double-double. Jordan McFarlen (11 points) and Jamal Williams (10) also chipped in offensively.

The loss drops the Cougars' Canada West record to 1-2.

Simon Fraser will now travel to Brandon for a game against the 1-4 Bobcats, while the Cougars will host Trinity Western (1-1) on Saturday night at the CKHS. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
