The University of Regina's No. 4-ranked women's basketball team has its first conference home games of the season this weekend, as they'll host Simon Fraser – the top-ranked team in the CIS – and Trinity Western on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Cougars enter Friday's game with a 2-0 record after recording a two-game sweep over Lethbridge last weekend.
Brittany Read was the story there, as the third-year post dominated down low and registered double-doubles in both games. Read averaged 21.5 points and 13 rebounds per game during the two contests, which the Cougars won by scores of 76-67 and 75-61.
Carmen Stewart (11.5),
Joanna Zalesiak (10.5), and
Gabrielle Gheyssen (10.0) also averaged in double figures for the Cougars against Lethbridge. Zalesiak led the team with 11 assists.
Friday's game will be a rematch of the final game of last year's CIS Championship at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport, which Simon Fraser took by a 68-62 score over the Cougars. The Clan, who are 3-0 this season, returned almost all of its team from last year and hold the No. 1 ranking in the CIS. Fourth-year post Laurelle Weigl leads Simon Fraser so far this season with an average of 14.3 points per game.
Trinity Western will pay a visit to the CKHS on Saturday. The Spartans enter the weekend with an 0-2 record – including a 99-39 loss to Simon Fraser – and will play at Brandon on Friday before coming to Regina. Fifth-year forward Lauren Doubroff (11.5) and fourth-year forward Amanda Knauff (11.0) both average in double figures in points per game for Trinity Western.
Both games are scheduled to tip off at 6:15 p.m. at the CKHS. Live video and statistics will both be available at
