11/27/2009 2:22:30 PM

After sweeping the University of Alberta on the road last weekend, the University of Regina's men's and women's basketball teams return home to finish off their pre-Christmas schedules against Fraser Valley and Thompson Rivers.

The women's games will go at 6:15 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night, while the men's games will tip off at 8:00 p.m. All four games will have live statistics and will be broadcast via live video at www.reginacougars.com.

Men's Preview

The men's team scored a 62-61 win last Friday over Alberta, then completed the weekend sweep with a 78-73 win over the Golden Bears on Saturday night. The two wins improved Regina's Canada West record to 3-3 on the season, as the Cougars currently sit in a four-way tie for second place in the tight Prairie Division.

Two Cougars could score their 1000th career point this weekend, as Jamal Williams comes into Friday's contest with 995 and Jeff Lukomski has 967. Paul Schubach, who has 909 career points, should also hit the milestone later this season.

The men will face Fraser Valley (3-3) on Friday night. Sam Freeman (16.7), Zeon Gray (14.5), and Kyle Grewal (14.3) all average in double figures in points per game for the Cascades, who have an all-time record of 1-2 against the Cougars. Two of the three games in the series were settled by three points or less.

Thompson Rivers enters the weekend still searching for their first win of the season, as the WolfPack have lost their first six Canada West games of the year. Fifth-year guard Sean Garvey is shooting 47.7% from three-point land this season and leads the WolfPack with 16.2 points per game.

The Cougars hold a 4-1 all-time advantage over Thompson Rivers in conference games. The two teams met earlier this season at the non-conference Graham Construction Shootout in Saskatoon, with Regina scoring a 76-63 win over the WolfPack.

Women's Preview

The women's team, which remains ranked No. 3 in this week's CIS Top Ten, defeated Alberta by a score of 68-64 last Friday night. On Saturday, the Cougars erased a 19-point second-quarter deficit thanks in large part to a career-high 28 points from Brittany Read and improved to 5-1 on the season with an 80-68 win.

Read ranks fourth in the conference with an average of 18.7 points per game and is third in Canada West with 8.7 rebounds per game. Joanna Zalesiak also averages in double figures for the Cougars with 12.3 points per contest.

Fraser Valley (0-4) has only played four games this season after being forced to postpone two games against Simon Fraser last weekend due to sickness related to the H1N1 virus. The Cascades boast Canada West's leading scorer, as fifth-year guard Jane Meadwell comes into the weekend averaging 21.8 points per game.

The Thompson Rivers WolfPack, who will play Brandon on Friday night before Saturday's matchup against the Cougars at the CKHS, come into the weekend with a 2-4 record. Second-year guard Jen Ju leads TRU with 14.5 points per game, while second-year post Diane Schuetze – a member of last season's CIS All-Rookie Team – averages 12.2 points and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds per game.

The U of R's women's team has an all-time record of 1-2 against Fraser Valley and is 4-1 against Thompson Rivers. The Cougars have not faced either team yet this season.
