The University of Regina's women's basketball team improved to 6-1 after an 87-70 win over the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cascades went toe-to-toe with the No. 3 ranked Cougars through the first 25 minutes of the game, but the Cougars scored 14 consecutive points over a four minute span late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to take control of the game.
Joanna Zalesiak had a game-high 20 points for the Cougars and added 12 rebounds and five assists.
Brittany Read also had a double-double for Regina with 17 points and 15 rebounds – 13 of which came on the offensive glass.
Lindsay Ledingham came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points, while
Stacey Walker was 4-for-6 from three-point land and ended up with 14 points.
Alyssa Gaukel and Tessa Hart both had 16 points to lead Fraser Valley. Jane Meadwell, who entered the game leading the conference in scoring, had 11 points. With a roster decimated by injury and illness, the Cascades dressed just nine players for the game and had eight players with at least 20 minutes on the floor.
Fraser Valley falls to 0-5 on the season with the loss. The Cascades will search for their first win of the Canada West schedule on Saturday night at Brandon (1-8).
The Cougars, who have a one-game lead atop the Prairie Division, will host Thompson Rivers (2-5) on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
