The University of Regina's men's basketball team scored a 92-79 victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Sunday afternoon in a Canada West men's basketball game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars went on a 18-5 run that gave them a 16-point lead midway through the second quarter, and it looked as if Regina might run away with the game early. Manitoba then went on a run of its own, scoring 14 of the last 16 points before halftime to pull to within four points. That would be as close as the Bisons would come, however, as the Cougars were able to keep Manitoba at arm's length and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter.

Paul Schubach scored a team-high 22 points for the Cougars and added eight rebounds and seven assists, while Jeff Lukomski, Kris Heshka, and Jamal Williams all scored 17. Williams added ten rebounds to register his ninth double-double of the season.

Chris Pereira hit six of his 11 three pointers and ended up with 24 points on the night, while Nathan Dixon had 21 for the Bisons. Dixon, Eric Garcia, and Myron Dean each played all 40 minutes for Manitoba, which used only six players during the contest.

The Bisons (4-16) are one game back of Winnipeg (5-14) for the final playoff position in the division and could fall even further behind the Wesmen if they're able to knock off the Brandon Bobcats on Sunday night. Manitoba finishes off its regular season next weekend on the road against Simon Fraser and Trinity Western.

The Cougar win sets the stage for a first-place showdown next week in Regina, as the U of R will host the Brandon Bobcats with the Great Plains Division title on the line. The Cougars will need to defeat Brandon in both games to take first place away from the Bobcats.

NOTES: Williams pulled ahead of U of R head coach James Hillis for 13th place on the school's all-time points list, as the fourth-year forward now has 897 points in 84 conference games … the Cougars scored a total of 192 points this weekend, their highest total in a regular season weekend series since putting up 205 points in 112-97 and 93-81 wins over Brandon on Nov. 15 and 16, 2002.
