Canada West announced its 2008-09 women's hockey all-star teams and individual award winners, naming the University of Regina's Kara McGeough a second-team all-star and including Cougars Rianne Wight and Naticia Leskun on its All-Rookie Team.

McGeough, a fifth-year forward, had six goals and 16 assists for a team-leading 22 points in the Cougars' 24 games in her final year of eligibility. Over her five-year career at the U of R, McGeough amassed 33 goals, 43 assists, and 76 points in 110 career games. She ranks seventh on the Cougars' all-time list in career points scored.

“It's nice to see her get rewarded in her fifth year,” Cougars head coach Sarah Howald said. “She had a good career with us and was our offensive leader this season. It's a much deserved award for Kara.”

Wight and Leskun both garnered berths on the Canada West All-Rookie Team. Wight came on strong towards the end of the season, ending up with five goals and five assists for ten points in 24 games. Leskun came on in relief of starting goalie Lisa Urban four times during the season and ended up with a 4.30 goals-against average and an .891 save percentage.

“Rianne works so hard and competes every day in both practices and games. She is very mature and has great leadership skills for a rookie,” Howald said. “Naticia obviously didn't play a lot of minutes, but by the end of the year we were very confident in her abilities. She has a bright future with our team and in the conference.”

The Cougars have had at least one Canada West all-star in every season since the women's hockey program started in 1998-99.
