The University of Regina's women's soccer team recovered from an early 2-0 deficit on Sunday afternoon to score a 3-2 road win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Lilli Young and Amy Schweitzer scored at the five and ten minute marks to put the Pronghorns (0-2-0) ahead, but it was all Cougars from there.
Tiffany Gyurek netted her first goal of the season at 15 minutes with a helper from
Maddie Sonea, and
Meagan Cormier tied the game five minutes later with assists from Gyurek and
Chelsie Dorosh.
Cormier scored her second goal of the game - and her fourth of the weekend - at the 30 minute mark, giving the Cougars a 3-2 lead that would stand for the remaining 60 minutes of the contest.
Michelle Anderson shut the door for the Cougars (1-1-0) after allowing the two early Pronghorn goals, ending up with 12 saves for the match - and eight in the second half alone.
The win was the first for the Cougars since Sept. 30, 2006, when the Cougars shut out Lethbridge by a 2-0 score. Entering Sunday, the Cougars were winless in their last 36 conference matches.
Now tied for the Canada West lead in goals scored (7), Regina will return home and prepare for their home openers next weekend. The Cougars will host Alberta (0-2-0) on Saturday and Saskatchewan (0-1-1) on Sunday. Both matches will kick off at high noon at the U of R Field.
